Despite having lived in Tokyo, set up offices in India, travelled all over South East Asia and the Himalayan region I’ve never actually set foot in China. Who knows? Yet, undeniably, China’s legion of 240 million mobile owners under 30 yrs old has a significant bearing on the shape of the mobile phone industry and we’re fortunate to have Jesse Hu in the region to do our on-the-street research for us down in Shenzhen city. Jesse directed this recent mobileYouth reportage from China:

Chinese youth are without doubt interesting to research due mainly to the sheer scope and variety. Due to social decisions upstream their number is in decline. There will be 13 million less Chinese youth in 2012 than there were 6 years earlier. 13 million is, needless to say, a large number – but in the grand scheme of things it’s still less than 3%. Despite the fall, mobile ownership continues to increase rapidly – from 240m in 2009 to 320m in 2012 – that’s 80 million youth still to buy their first phone in the next 3 years.
