As social media becomes widespread, youth seek Discrete Networks to maintain relevance. Adults often misread Discrete Networks as a sign youth are fleeing a platform (e.g. youth not friending brands as a sign they are not on Facebook anymore). In messaging, youth will switch from open Facebook messaging to BBM Groups (see Group Messaging and Video). Discrete Networks facilitate Passive Communication and peer group Belonging.
