A parental group in Australia has described a mobile game launched for teenage girls as “toxic” and “grossly inappropriate” after it was revealed that game characters were being encouraged to take drugs, drink and become pregnant.
The title ‘The Coolest Girl’, co-developed by Kukan Studio and Holly Owen of Champagne for the ladies describes itself a a game for letting players “live out their high school fantasies”.
However it appears that aspects of the game which allows the player to select a more risque profile for their character has “outraged parents and family groups.”
Players can choose whether to experiment with drugs, alcohol and smoking, skip school, spread rumours, bully and even fall pregnant in their effort to win the game.
Talking to The Telegraph in Australia, Holly Owen of Champagne for the Ladies proclaims that she “came up with the idea for girls who didn’t really like playing games.”
She add “it’s not about glorifying bad things, it’s about giving young girls the opportunity to play around with high school.”
The game is currently being tested on an audience launches in January through the Champagne for Ladies MySpace page.
