Like most teenagers her age, recognition by the products and brands that touch her life was narrowly confined to advertising, promotions and unsigned birthday cards. To “win” something or to feel that for a brief moment, the cloud cover broke and the light shined on you was for 17 year old Kelly nothing short of a miracle.
“This is way cool…” she responded, “Now I can drink me!”
We can only imagine how many friends Kelly told that weekend. Numerous trips to the local store to check for her very own bottle to be displayed in the rack would have been met by disappointment until that one day – there she was, her photo beaming back at herself from the cooler cabinet.
95% of the information they receive at any one time is gated out – what makes you worthy of the 5%? You may have a dancing bear but unless you’re already on their radar – your message is simply part of the noise. So, forget mobile, forget social media marketing because the only way to get into that 5% is to engage youth in the process.
If youth aren’t part of the product development or marketing process – you don’t even stand a chance.
