In a large proportion of youth communication is Passive. Youth can “hangout” in groups with little active communication but still communicate social meaning. Passive communication can also be found in online interactions too – e.g. Video chat services like ooVoo. Adults tend to have an agenda when communicating with others (e.g. “look at me”) and wrongly extrapolate this behavior to pre-emptying youth behavior.
