Social Tools

by Graham Brown on January 1, 2011

A product, story or brand used by a young person to create interaction. By using the tool (e.g. a mobile phone, brand message or technology), they can create Belonging and/or Significance (i.e. Social Currency).

Mobile phones, mobile networks and mobile applications are good examples of social tools because they enable youth to not only communicate with each other but also plan and arrange physical offline meetups. Similarly social media services like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are also key Social Tools for young people. Video chat services like Skype, Oovoo and TinyChat are emerging as the next wave of social tools popular among youth.
