Number 2 from our Youth Trends Report 2010
Why do so many organizations fail when they invest in social media? Because they follow the path of the Meatball Sundae – new media but business as usual. The Social Media campfire means old behaviors, new media – redefining technology to fit within the parameters of the individual’s experience.
Pokemon built a $80bn global empire on the back of timeless behaviors that existed with tween boys manifested as sharing, trading and good ole’ fighting. Nintendo didn’t try to reinvent the behavior – merely find out how they could use the technology to bring it into the digital age.
The Campfire is the human archetype of Social Currency – the rituals and behaviors that have timeless grounding, manifested in each new generation with new technologies and capabilities.
