Just back from the best part of a week in Kuala Lumpur. This is what we got up to:
* Caught up with the YRP crew: John Solomon, Bernard Hor, Faisal Muhammad and Samyak Chakrabarty. Photos: Strictly business @ the poolside followed by obligatory cultural sampling that is core to YRP philosophy (in this case it’s Nasi Lemak for breakfast).

* Bernard’s mobileYouth Unconference was a success; initiated with appropriate Government blessing from the Malaysian ministry and then resulting in the climax – 2 Young Ideas Salons – one hosted by myself and the other by Bangsar Boy Niki Cheong.

* Unconference speakers sessions included me, Ian Stewart – head of Friendster Asia, and Faisal Muhammad from Youth Research Lab Indonesia. Photos below include humorous highlights from Ian Stewart’s presentation, Faisal Muhammad presenting on youth insights Indonesia and my opening presentation

* Got covered in a Star Malaysia interview. Reporter’s first question was (in all sincerity) – “What is Youth Marketing?” More to follow

3 Key Points featured in the Slides:
1) Malaysia is Stable. Of all the South East Asian mobile youth markets, Malaysia remains stable with positive revenue growth forecast 2009-2012.
2) Changing the growth story. Malaysian operators need to move from driving top line revenues and widening their market to a deepening strategy as Youth ARPU bottoms out at $17.5 and revenues slow
3) Malaysia is Saturated. In 20-29 yrs, penetration rates pass 200% – that means 2 activations for every 1 youth. This poses 3 problems for malaysian operators – 1) metrics are ineffective 2) rising churn rates 3) revenue dilution
