Virtual worlds are the pied piper for your children

Youth are migrating to virtual worlds en masse, and you haven’t even heard of the places they’re visiting yet… Welcome to the world of Webkinz, Club Penguin, Cartoon Doll Emporium amongst others (challengers to the established Neopets et al) - virtual worlds aimed at teens and younger that have been quietly and diligently building an army of faithful cohorts to keep your children occupied.
Figures from Nielsen//NetRatings that compare January 2007 with July 2007 show significant growth for Webkinz in particular. These data show the site’s unique US audience increasing by 176.8% in the period. Other kid and teen virtual world sites experienced growth between 29% and 357%.

Good news? Well, not if you read this post by Ypulse which asks whether Virtual Worlds are stressing children out.
