Good post Graham. When we are working with clients in China on insights or consumer testing, we also ask to include their VIPs or most passionate consumers. First of all, you are bringing them into the process and they feel more apart of what you are developing. We have seen this recently with FMCGs looking to crowdsource packaging design through a network of passion kids. Second, they tend to have strong opinions about your brand and are usually not afraid to share. An all around good strategy for insights and also as brand ambassadors down the road. Cheers!
